The movement appeared after a split in the ranks of the armed movement caused by the signing of a peace agreement between the leadership of the Sudan Liberation Movement and the government of the country.
Creation of NRF was declared in Asmara (Eritrea) on May 26, 2006. It was founded by three rebel organizations of Darfur – the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), a faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Sudan Federal Democratic Alliance (SFDA). The movement was headed by a former governor of Darfur, Ahmed Diraige.
The movement is rather young, that's why it doesn't yet have its own symbols. The armed units use ordinary abbreviated name to indicate their belonging to NRF.
